NPDES Permits
Farms meeting the MDEQ’s Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) are required to have a NPDES permit as well as an approved CNMP. Once the permit is approved, annual record updates must be submitted to maintain compliance.
Manure Storage Evaluations
If a farm is currently a CAFO or expanding to become a CAFO, existing manure storages are required to meet the NRCS 313 waste storage facility standard. In the absence of approved construction as-builts, an engineering evaluation is required.
New and Expanding Operations
In order to be protected through Michigan’s Right to Farm Act, new and expanding operations should submit a Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices (GAAMPs) siting application for review by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD).
